Jordan Johnson, Counseling Intern, Old Dominion University

I believe therapy is a team effort, and my goal is to create a space where you feel supported, encouraged, and empowered to grow at your own pace. My style is warm, genuine, and collaborative, with a strong focus on helping you understand the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I work with individuals navigating depression, anxiety, and other emotional challenges, while also helping clients build practical skills they can use beyond the therapy room. Whether we’re reflecting, challenging old thought patterns, using humor to create perspective, or incorporating faith-based counseling when desired, I want you to know that your voice matters and meaningful change is always possible.

Therapist Profile

1. How would you describe your therapy style in everyday language?

My therapy style is warm, encouraging, and team-oriented. Think of it as having someone in your corner who's going to support you, challenge your thinking, and remind you that growth is possible—even on the hard days. I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps us connect the dots between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors so you can create meaningful, lasting change. Therapy isn't something I do to you—it's something we work through together.

2. What type of client do you tend to connect with best?

I connect with people from all walks of life, but I especially enjoy working with individuals who are open to growth, willing to explore new perspectives, and ready to take small steps toward becoming the best version of themselves. You don't have to have everything figured out—you just have to be willing to start.

3. What do clients usually appreciate most about working with you?

Clients often tell me they appreciate how genuine and relatable I am. They know I'm invested in their success and that I truly care about what they're going through. My goal is to create a space where you feel heard, supported, and empowered—not judged.

4. How do you help clients feel comfortable when they are nervous, guarded, or unsure about therapy?

Starting therapy can feel intimidating, and that's completely normal. I never expect someone to open up overnight. Instead, I acknowledge those feelings and remind clients that therapy is a journey we take together—the good, the bad, and everything in between. There's no pressure to be perfect or have all the answers. We'll move at a pace that feels right for you.

5. What topics, life experiences, or mental health concerns do you feel especially called to support?

Having personally experienced depression, I understand how isolating and overwhelming it can feel. That experience has given me a deeper sense of empathy for those navigating depression, anxiety, and life's emotional challenges. While I have a special heart for supporting individuals facing depression, I'm passionate about helping people work through a wide range of mental health concerns and discover hope on the other side.

6. What should a new client know about what it feels like to sit in session with you?

Expect a conversation—not an interrogation. I'll gently ask questions that help you reflect, connect the dots, and discover insights about yourself. You don't have to perform or say the "right" thing. My role is to walk alongside you, encourage your growth, and create a space where your voice matters.

7. Outside of your clinical work, what are 2–3 things that show your personality?

Creativity is a big part of who I am. I enjoy writing, making music, and spending time outdoors on nature walks. Whether I'm putting thoughts into words, creating something meaningful through music, or finding peace in nature, those moments help keep me grounded and remind me of the importance of balance and self-care.

8. Do you use humor, pop culture, storytelling, faith/spirituality, homework, journaling, or practical tools in your sessions? If so, how?

Absolutely. I believe therapy should fit the person, not the other way around. Humor often helps lighten the mood and create perspective during difficult moments. I also incorporate practical CBT strategies clients can use between sessions. For those who desire it, I'm happy to integrate Christian counseling and faith-based principles into our work together, honoring your beliefs while supporting your emotional and mental well-being.

9. What is one misconception people may have about therapy that you wish you could clear up?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that therapists have all the answers. The truth is, therapy isn't about me "fixing" you. It's a collaborative process where we work together to better understand your experiences, build new skills, and create lasting change. Real healing takes time, trust, and teamwork

10. Complete this sentence: "You might be a good fit for me if you're looking for a therapist who..."

"...hears your story, sees your worth, meets you where you are, and believes that no matter what you've been through, growth is always possible."

Guiding you with care, understanding, and purpose.
